Entry #7 Fresh
Have you ever wondered what issues in the food industry have arisen? In the United States there is a huge issue on the way our produce is made and distributed as well as the journey animals have to endure just to end up in plastic packaging in a grocery store. Fresh, is a documentary by Ana Sofia Joanes. The documentary shows the efforts farmers go through to maintain a sustainable agriculture. It focuses on the fact that although the U.S. is going in the wrong direction when it comes to its agriculture it's not too late to change its ways and re-invent food production.
In the film it emphasizes on sustainable agriculture and the process/experiences farmers face to make an impact on changing America's food system. It goes into depth about the harmful and damaging industrial techniques of farming and production. By showing the products and process of mass production farming, it makes it easier for American's to see what went into making their food, the effects this process is making on the environment, and the skewed ways of industrialized culture.
As the documentary progressed I learned new things about the food system. I was surprised about how many factors and synthetic products go into the produce and the feedings of animals. One thing that shocked me the most was that many large companies are feeding cows the remains/meat of dead cows regardless of the fact that they are herbivores. Out of convenience these large corporations choose to feed their animals the wrong diet even when they are not anatomically built for it. The FDA Government states, "Cows, for example, have a very different digestive system than our own, and this allows them to thrive on a menu predominantly made up of grass." The way a cows mouth and digestive structure is built makes it easier for them to breakdown, process, and absorb their nutrients from grass.
As I learned more about the food industry and how things work, the new ways of production aren't the most healthy and beneficial for society and especially the animals. For healthier and sustainable alternatives I think it's best for the system to change as a whole. The importance of this film helps support and highlight the ongoing issues in agriculture as it's advocating for a change. It may seem like America is too far gone to improve the food system but by slowly becoming more sustainable a difference will be noticed.
