Entry #9 Topics in Food Quest

Did you know that when people think of America a lot of people's minds drifts towards our mass food consumption? Or the obesity epidemic that has spiked throughout the years? Below is a political comic that visually represents the consumption and advertisements of the food that is so frequently eaten.

Advertisements are constantly being thrown in people's faces wherever they go, to the point it has become a normal thing. I think this is something important to be aware about because it has a huge impact on the eating culture in America to the point it becomes a second thought. In the comic it shows a handful of people who seem to be unhealthily overweight but still continue to eat the foods that led them to that state. Being surrounded by unhealthy choices makes it that much more tempting to indulge into those unhealthy foods.

The surroundings someone is in has a large influence on their food choices. The Obesity Prevention Source claims, "In the U.S. and many parts of the world, the so-called food environment-the physical and social surroundings that influence what we eat-makes it far too hard to choose healthy foods..." the characters in the comic support the statement by being shown eating foods that aren't the most beneficial  their health. A character in the drawing states, " Yeah... Urp! We're late for health..." despite being aware of the foods she and her friend are eating they will continue to make the same decision repeatedly because they choose to be oblivious to the consequences.

The illustration shows a small portion of what life is like for many people out there which is an even better reason to be informed about the foods that are being made, advertised, and then consumed. The How Fast Food Advertisements Get Under Your Skin, Whether You Realize It Or Not article goes into detail about the wide impact advertisement has on people and how it works even if people are or aren't aware. Food products being constantly promoted and advertised everywhere has heavily influenced the food culture and consumption in America.
